The Old Tapes

(or the beginning of my friends ear troubles...)

All this happened a loooong looong time ago... At that time everything was so different...

In the beginning was the Tape. This marvelous thing enabled the learning  musician to record himself and sometimes his friends (yes we dared!). The result was often funny and the sound incredibly bad but anyway the music was not worth better :-). You will find here some of my (almost) first recordings on tape, just for fun.

... Have fun!

Smoke In The Waters (mp3)

Maybe the worst title ever... It is a very bad play on words in French ('Waters' can mean 'Toilets' or 'Bathrooms'). It is of course based on the famous Deep Purple hit. I had just learnt pentatonic scales a few weeks before, so I wanted to give it a try...

Gear :

Recording :

As you can hear in the recording it seems there are several tracks. In fact the way I recorded this is the following : I had two tape recorders, so I recorded track after track, each time with the previous tracks playing behind.

The only trouble is that both tape recorders did not have the same speed, so pitch was going up and the beat speeding up each time I recorded a track... Really crazy!

By the Way, the kind of Bass sound you can hear behind is not a bass guitar, but only my guitar with an octava pitch shifter (with the zoom 9000).

@Home (mp3)

You can find a newer version of this song on the Blue Cat Demo Page. Here is one of the first recordings (just when the idea came up...). Guitar solo is incredibly horrible, but this is just an old one take first recording. The method and gear I used to record this stuff was the same as the one for 'Smoke In The Waters'.

Electro (mp3)

This one was done when I discovered what MIDI and Synths were. It was written with a computer, and the sounds are issued from a Soundblaster AWE32 soundcard. The only trouble is that I lost the original MIDI file, so I just have an old tape left , which explains the hiss on the recording. Anyway the music is quite simple and naive :-).
